Multi-Level Loop Explained

Carpet tiles are constructed in a variety of different ways, often with different types of backing (this is the underside matting to the carpet tile which sits directly on the subfloor) which can include felt, bitumen and a variety of recycled materials including even plastic bottles!  The backing itself isn’t fundamental in the appearance of the carpet tile, however it does have a bearing on softness, durability and sound transfer and impact noise (i.e. how much it dampens or softens the noise of your tread when you walk on it on it).

A Loop Pile carpet is produced by attaching the yarn to the tile backing in a series of loops, with the looped section facing upwards – which is the bit you see and walk on.  Looping the yarn creates a more durable carpet compared to, for example, a cut pile of the same density. The loops are normally finished to the same height so as to give a uniform appearance, and the carpet tile can have a high level loop (meaning that they sit taller) or low level loop (meaning they are shorter).  To create a pattern with a level loop carpet tile, different colours of yarn need to be mixed into the tile in order to produce the required design.

However, a further dimension in pattern creation can be achieved by varying the height of the loops. This is known as multi-level loop. As well as providing a colour pattern (if different coloured yarns are used within the same tile) this additional dimension produces a structural pattern which generally presents a much more interesting look and feel.
